The purpose of this paper is to examine how effective mobile devices are in the process of teaching and learning English through the perspective of university students. The research is aimed at finding out whether using mobile apps for learning purposes, in particular, for learning English is of interest for students and look at potential ways of learning the language. It also aims at exploring potential of educational applications downloaded to students’ mobile phones in terms of their integration into the classroom activities at university for the purposes of learning English. To fully conceptualize the research in mobile teaching and learning, the authors addressed the mentioned problem by using Google Forms. An online questionnaire was created and sent to students with responses collected in an online spreadsheet and was further analyzed by the authors. 102 representatives from 16 countries who study at 4 universities located in Poland and Ukraine took part in the survey. To link the reported mobile device use obtained from the questionnaire and its actual use for language learning the follow-up interviews for the subset of students were conducted with the relevant conclusions drawn. The issue of using mobile devices in the process of university study as an educational tool was investigated and proposed to potentially expand perceptions of tutorial experience of how we view teaching and learning English.

Do they really cause students enjoy learning and learn more with less effort? Even an optimist guesses it may not be like this. Do we (teachers) know how the mobile-assisted process of learning runs, what its advantages, weaknesses and limits are, whether learners really remember more, and/or enjoy the learning more? What is the role of the ‘novelty’ factor regarding the latest technologies? Do learners know how to exploit them for education purposes? The aim of this article is to analyze the determinants of use of mobile operator’s websites providing services for mobile device users from the customer’s point of view. This is the last study of the series of research into the mobile sphere, supplementary in relation to previous analyses of the use of mobile devices, mobile applications and websites offering them. The findings presented in the article focus on the websites of operators offering the possibility to manage the access and services which may be run on mobile devices. The paper presents research objectives and questions, description of methodology and study sample as well as a comparative analysis of the obtained results and relevant discussion. The qualitative research was conducted on a selected sample of university students by means of a standardized scoring method used to evaluate selected characteristics of websites.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza uwarunkowań wykorzystania witryn internetowych operatorów komórkowych dostarczających usługi dla użytkowników urządzeń mobilnych z punktu widzenia klienta. Jest to ostatnie z cyklu badań dotyczących sfery mobilnej uzupełniające analizy poprzednie z zakresu wykorzystania urządzeń mobilnych, aplikacji mobilnych i serwisów je dostarczających. Zawarte w opracowaniu wyniki doświadczeń koncentrują się wokół serwisów internetowych operatorów zapewniających możliwość zarządzania dostępem i zakresem usług możliwych do realizacji na urządzeniach mobilnych. Struktura pracy składa się z przedstawienia założeń badania i pytań badawczych, opisu metodologii i próby badawczej oraz analizy porównawczej uzyskanych wyników i ich dyskusji. Badanie mające charakter jakościowy przeprowadzono na wyselekcjonowanej próbie studentów uczelni wyższych, stosując standaryzowaną metodę punktową do oceny wyróżnionych charakterystycznych cech serwisów.

Significant civilization changes resulting in the formation of a network society, involve a need to seek new and more effective models of education utilizing the potential of new media. The study area − the use of ICT in educational services − has been limited to the identification and analysis activities in support of search and selection of necessary information. The purpose of this article is to identify the tools and mechanisms used primarily in virtual space, which allow for an increase of motivation of learners and the perception of knowledge, and hence, achieving the desired educational goals. The article was developed based on a review which had been conducted regarding services and educational applications proving the effectiveness of using the mechanism of gamification and mobile devices in education and on the basis of the results of qualitative research conducted by the author at the time of the scientific research internship in a consulting and training enterprise. The publication is of research and analysis character and can provide a contribution to the in-depth empirical research.

Dostęp do technologii mobilnych to trend ogólny – korzystają z nich niemal wszyscy, bez względu na wiek, płeć, status społeczny czy zawodowy. Kontakt z nimi mają coraz młodsze dzieci. Z badań wynika, że dzieci roczne, a nawet dwuletnie posiadają własne urządzenia mobilne. Korzystanie z takich urządzeń niesie jednak szereg zagrożeń dla rozwoju dzieci, przyczyniając się do licznych zaburzeń w rozwoju fizycznym, emocjonalnym i poznawczym. Przy odpowiedniej kontroli ze strony dorosłych urządzenia te mogą jednak wzbogacać proces rozwoju i edukacji dzieci.

Access to mobile technology is a general trend – almost all of us use them, regardless of age, gender, social status and profession. Younger and younger children have contact with them. Research shows that even one - and two - year - old children have their own mobile devices. Improper use of these devices, however, carries a number of risks for the development of children, contributing to numerous disorders in their physical, emotional and cognitive development. With proper control by the adults these devices can, however, enrich children’s educational process.

The article presents the main aspects of the development of the market of mobile devices and solutions for using the Internet. In the following part, the authors present a pilot study on the use of mobile technology in terms of mobile web pages. The survey contains four main categories of companies, i.e.: having mobile websites, carrying out a project to implement this type of solution, planning to start such a project, and not planning to take this type of action. Next, the authors present and analyze the results of pilot studies. The article is crowned with conclusions regarding the level of awareness of the use of mobile web technologies in business in the Polish SME sector.

W artykule autorka prezentuje realizację dotacji Ministerstwa Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego na zadania związane ze stwarzaniem studentom i doktorantom, będącym osobami niepełnosprawnymi, warunków do pełnego udziału w procesie kształcenia. Dotacja miała miejsce w Bibliotece Wyższej Szkoły Bankowej w Toruniu. W 2013 roku wdrożono tu nowatorskie działanie w środowisku akademickim, a mianowicie zakupiono e-booki (e-książki) w formacie e-pub i pdf, a następnie wgrano je na czytniki Vedia K10 (również sfinansowane z ministerialnej dotacji). Stworzono w ten sposób tematyczne, akademickie kolekcje wypożyczane studentom oraz pracownikom WSB na 20 czytnikach e-książek. Rok później biblioteka otrzymała w darze od założyciela (TEB Akademia) 25 czytników typu Kindle. Autorka opisała koncepcję oraz proces wdrażania nowych form zbiorów w bibliotece. W ten sposób zaprezentowano zmiany zachodzące w bibliotece przede wszystkim w oferowanych przez placówkę usługach, jak i wzbogacaniu profilu gromadzonych zbiorów. Niewątpliwie są to procesy wpływające na pozytywny wizerunek placówki uczelnianej wśród użytkowników.

In this article the author presents a new form of collections at the Library of the School of Banking in Torun (WSB in Torun). They are closely tailored to the profile of the University and the needs of users. These collections serve both students and staff in conducting research. In 2013 the library WSB implemented a ministerial project addressed at persons with disablilities. Audiobooks, e-book readers and about 180 titles of e-books of economic literature (e-pub and PDF) were purchased from the grants. The library staff created academic e-collections dedicated to students and teaching staff of the college. E-collections are available on 20 Vedia e-book readers. A year later, the library collections increased with 25 Kindle reader, which the library received as a gift from the founder - TEB Academy in Poznan. In practice, the mobile devices are very attractive for the users and significantly enrich the library collections.

System szkolny ulega ciągłym zmianom. Jego reforma najczęściej ma charakter formalny i dotyka struktury tego systemu. Nie zauważa się dysonansu, jaki występuje między stosowaniem współczesnych urządzeń mobilnych związanych z IT przez uczniów i studentów a wykorzystywaniem ich w procesie nauczania przez nauczycieli wszystkich szczebli. Badania na temat aktualnego funkcjonowania studentów kształconych na nauczycieli w świecie mobilnych urządzeń pozwolą na określenie przyszłych trendów wykorzystywania tych urządzeń w polskich szkołach.

The education system is constantly changing. It’s reform is mostly formal and affects the whole structure of the system. The dissonance, between using the modern mobile devices, associated with IT by the students and deployment in the teaching process by the teachers at all levels, is not noticeable. Research on the current functioning of the students, educated teachers, in the mobile devices world will help to determine the future trends in those devices use in Polish schools.

Możliwości i coraz powszechniejsze wykorzystanie urządzeń mobilnych wymuszają opracowywanie nowych standardów transmisji bezprzewodowej w celu poprawy jakości usług. Wszystkie technologie są systematycznie rozwijane ze względu na konieczność zapewnienia między nimi współpracy, potrzebę wzrostu prędkości transmisji i efektywniejszego wykorzystania łączy. Działania prowadzone za pomocą rozwiązań mobilnych – by mogły być powszechnie stosowane i rozwijane – muszą być niezawodne i bezpieczne. Dlatego coraz większą wagę przywiązuje się nie tylko do poprawy parametrów transmisji i wzrostu funkcjonalności urządzeń, ale także do zapewnienia wysokiego poziomu ochrony systemów teleinformatycznych. Urządzenia mobilne bardzo często są wykorzystywane do przechowywania danych poufnych oraz do ich przesyłania, co potwierdzają także wyniki przeprowadzonej ankiety dotyczącej użytkowania urządzeń mobilnych, których omówienie jest zamieszczone w artykule. Autorzy podkreślili wagę problemu bezpieczeństwa użytkowania urządzeń mobilnych wobec dynamicznego rozwoju nowych technologii i wzrostu zagrożeń sieciowych.

The numerous benefits of access to mobile Internet sparked great interest in wireless solutions, fostering their dynamic growth seen in recent years. The opportunities and increasing usage of mobile devices necessitate the development of new wireless standards to improve the quality of services. All technologies are systematically developed due to the need to ensure Interoperability between them, the need to increase the transmission speed and the need for efficient use of bandwidth. Activities undertaken with mobile solutions – in order to be widely used and developed – must be reliable and secure. That is why more and more attention is paid not only to improvements in transmission parameters and increased functionality of devices, but also to ensuring a high level of system protection. Mobile devices are often used to store and transmit confidential data, which is also confirmed by the results of the survey into the use of mobile devices, which is the topic of this article. The authors stress the importance of the problem of safety in mobile devices usage in the light of rapid development of new technologies and the increase in network threats.

Obecnie na rynku istnieje wiele aplikacji mobilnych, pracujących w zintegrowanych systemach sterowania automatyki budynkowej. Autor, chcąc przejść o krok dalej, postanowił rozszerzyć standardowy sposób kontroli urządzeń elektrycznych o możliwość dwukierunkowej komunikacji werbalnej. Dzięki temu, oprócz standardowej procedury sterowania przyciskami funkcyjnymi, proces ten może być realizowany z wykorzystaniem komend głosowych wydawanych przez operatora. Aplikacja, dedykowana na platformę systemową Android, została zaprojektowana w taki sposób, aby operatorem mógł być każdy człowiek, niezależnie od wieku, płci czy barwy głosu. Dodatkowo, po dokonaniu stosownej konfiguracji urządzenia mobilnego, istnieje możliwość wydawania komend głosowych w bardzo szerokiej gamie języków obcych. Ponadto interfejs użytkownika pozwala na usłyszenie odpowiedzi zwrotnej, dotyczącej poprawności wykonania danej komendy. Ta funkcja została zrealizowana z zastosowaniem wbudowanego syntezatora mowy.

Currently, there are many mobile applications working in integrated building automation control systems. The author, attempting to go a step further, decided to extend the standard method of electrical devices controlling by adding the possibility of two-way verbal communication. Thanks to this, in addition to the standard procedure of the function keys controlling, the control process can be carried out using the voice commands issued by the operator. The application dedicated to the Android system platform has been designed in such a way that it can be operated by any person regardless of their age, gender or voice tone. Additionally, after making the appropriate configuration of the mobile device, it is possible to issue voice commands in a very wide range of foreign languages. In addition, the user interface allows you to hear a response regarding the correctness of the given command. This function has been implemented using a built-in speech synthesizer

The technological development and growing consumer needs influence both the dynamics of launching new mobile devices with the access to the internet and introducing into common parlance terms describing these devices and activities related to their use. Tablet, iPad, Web Developer, surfowanie and czatowanie are just a few examples of the many neologisms that have been introduced and widely used in the two recent decades. For several years, smartphones with the functions of a portable computer have gained popularity among young consumers. Apart from many advantages, dangerous consequences associated with the uncontrolled use of these devices are being noticed. This article describes the smombie concept introduced into language in 2015. This expression refers to a person preoccupied with their smartphone, participating simultaneously in public life. A characteristic feature of smombies is the loss of contact with their surroundings. The article presents a typology of smombies, differentiating the smartphone users in terms of the threats they may cause in their surroundings. The consequences of these devices misuse is presented on the basis of available sources overview. Smombie is one result of the addiction to phones, caused by the uncritical use of these devices. Smartphone users are usually very young consumers. There is a need for introducing preventive measures.

Aim. The article aims to present the phenomenon of digital dementia in the context of measures aimed at minimising this phenomenon through digital balance measures, which are increasingly available in standard Android overlays. In addition, the article provides an overview of measures available in the form of software, and applications for mobile devices running on Android, which will allow for better monitoring control by parents in terms management of their children’s screen time. Method. The article is a review of selected practical solutions with theoretical justification based on Polish and world literature. Results. This article presents theoretical issues based on a literature review and presents available practical solutions to digital dementia in children. The influences of the family environment, parents’ awareness, and their viewpoints, is indisputable in shaping attitudes leading to unreflective multimedia abuse by children. In many studies, the excessive influence of multimedia is negatively portrayed, despite the many advantages that multimedia gives us. There are many solutions in the form of monitoring applications that make it possible to minimise undesirable activities for the healthy development of children and young people. Conclusions. Parents are the first people to introduce their children to the world of multimedia, showing them, by their behaviour, how to spend their free time, and permitting them to use it as they wish. It is difficult to escape from the digitalization of some areas of human life. Only a fully conscious approach by parents and teachers and skilful presentation of alternative solutions in the form of valuable entertainment can minimize the negative effects on children’s development. However, the available applications in the android system allow parents to monitor time data related to their use.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie zjawiska demencji cyfrowej oraz działań podejmowanych, aby je zminimalizować poprzez zastosowanie cyfrowej równowagi, która jest coraz częściej dostępna w standardowych nakładkach na system Android. Ponadto artykuł zwiera przegląd środków w postaci oprogramowania, aplikacji na urządzenia mobilne działające w systemie Android, które pozwalają rodzicom lepiej monitorować czas spędzany przed ekranem przez ich dzieci. Metoda. Artykuł stanowi przegląd wybranych praktycznych rozwiązań wraz z teoretycznym uzasadnieniem na podstawie literatury polskiej i światowej. Wyniki. W artykule przedstawiono zagadnienia teoretyczne na podstawie przeglądu literatury oraz zaprezentowano dostępne praktyczne rozwiązania problemów dotyczących demencji cyfrowej u dzieci. Wpływ środowiska rodzinnego, braku świadomości rodziców oraz ich podejście do tego tematu są bezdyskusyjne w procesie kształtowania się postaw bezrefleksyjnego nadużywania multimediów przez dzieci. W wielu opracowaniach nadmierne korzystanie z multimediów jest przedstawiane negatywnie, pomimo licznych zalet, jakie nam one dają. Istnieje dużo rozwiązań w postaci aplikacji monitorujących, które pozwalają na zminimalizowanie działań niepożądanych dla zdrowego rozwoju dzieci i młodzieży. Wnioski. Rodzice są pierwszymi osobami, które wprowadzają dzieci w świat multimediów, pokazują im swoim zachowaniem, jak należy spędzać czas wolny oraz dają przyzwolenie na dowolne korzystanie z technologii (Lauricella, Wartella, Rideout, 2015). Trudno uciec od digitalizacji niektórych obszarów ludzkiego życia. The article argues that early access to mobile devices is especially harmful for children who have not yet created in their minds the outlines of representations of three- dimensional objects and the three-dimensional space in which they function. Deformations in the outlines of the representations created while viewing objects on the screen of a tablet computer or smartphone are difficult to correct later, because subsequent cognitive experiences only supplement and enrich the already existing representations. To prove this, I refer to a more important finding contained in the representation theory of J. S. Bruner, in order to explain what makes infants and toddlers amazingly proficient with smartphones and tablets. In order to show the unfavorable differences in the representations created by small children from the experiences gathered in the world of real objects and the virtual world, I cite the results of my own research. The results of these studies signal the fatal effects of the use of mobile devices by adults in the process of raising young children. I also justify the need to undertake serious research aimed at determining the far-reaching effects of sharing tablets and smartphones with infants and young children. This will help tame these wonderful devices in an educational way, as well as determine when and how long it is safe for the child’s mental development to share a tablet and a smartphone.

W tekście postawiono tezę, iż udostępnianie urządzeń mobilnych jest szczególnie groźne dla małych dzieci, które nie stworzyły w swoich umysłach zarysów reprezentacji trójwymiarowych obiektów oraz trójwymiarowej przestrzeni, w której funkcjonują. Deformacje w zarysach reprezentacji tworzonych w trakcie oglądania obiektów na ekranie tabletu lub smartfonu trudno naprawić w późniejszym czasie, gdyż następne doświadczenia poznawcze jedynie uzupełniają i wzbogacają posiadane już reprezentacje. By to udowodnić, przytoczono ważniejsze ustalenie zawarte w teorii reprezentacji J. S. Brunera, a następnie wyjaśniono, co sprawia, że niemowlaki i małe dzieci zadziwiająco sprawnie posługują się smartfonami i tabletami. Żeby pokazać niekorzystne różnice w reprezentacjach tworzonych przez dzieci z doświadczeń zgromadzonych w świecie realnych obiektów i świecie wirtualnym, przytoczono wyniki własnych badań, które sygnalizują fatalne skutki stosowania przez dorosłych urządzeń mobilnych w procesie wychowywania małych dzieci. Uzasadniono też konieczność podjęcia poważnych badań, których celem ma być ustalenie dalekosiężnych skutków udostępniania tabletów i smartfonów niemowlakom i małym dzieciom. Pomoże to oswoić wychowawczo i edukacyjnie te wspaniałe urządzenia, a także określić, kiedy i na jak długo można bezpiecznie dla rozwoju umysłowego dziecka udostępnić mu tablet i smartfon.
