The article presents the results of a questionnaire in which I asked theatrical translators about e.g. their education, number of plays translated, opinion about the specific nature of translating for theatre, attitude to adaptations, the biggest satisfactions and disappointments related to working on translations of theatre plays. The comparison and interpretation of answers sent by 25 translators, mostly living in France and translating into French, are complemented by the points of view of two Polish respondents as well as by information about the profile of theatrical translators in the United Kingdom and Italy, information from the latest scholarly publications devoted to this field of translation.

On dans la traduction polonaise des écrits de recherche. Sur l’exemple de la traduction des Catégories du récit littéraire de Tzvetan Todorov

This paper analyses the strategies of Polish publishers of French literature after 1989. Research shows that Polish publishers on the free market consider French literature as a good source of revenue and a good way to gain prestige. Here, a distinction can be observed between publishers keeping in balance the economic and symbolic capital (the so-called “generalists”), publishers aiming to commercial success only, and publishers anxious for the prestige of their brand above all. Statistics show that popular literature is translated as well as prestigious literature (contemporary texts and works which were not published in Polish previously). The publishers’ outsourcing practices and a new generation of translators also have a significant influence on the quality of translations.

The front cover of a book usually contains the title, the authors’names, the publisher’s logo and an illustration. All these elements announce the content of the book, and the paraverbal elements (illustration, typographical arrangement…) can also be used to awaken the curiosity of the potential reader. This article deals with the reproductions of art works chosen by the editors for the front covers of Translation Studies books. Cover illustrations are treated here as a kind of “definition of translator’s work through a pictorial metaphor”, i.e. as a representation of how translation can be understood or as an indication of its important features. The analysis of these illustrations shows the various means used by the publishers of Translation Studies books to define translation through pictures.

From among 21 novels by Tadeusz Konwicki, 10 have been translated into French. All the translations have been accompanied by an editorial paratext on the back cover (blurb). The content of the blurbs serves as a ground for the reconstruction of the author’s “portrait” painted by the information on himself and his work. The recurrent elements show an eminent writer – but also a screenwriter and film director – whose works are appreciated by both Polish and foreign readers. The reasons for this are literary and biographical, as Konwicki is an author uniquely involved in history and politics.
