The subject of the article is the level of interest that Polish students show for issues of humanitarian aid, organized in Poland for the current needs of Africa. The author decided to verify the conviction arising from her own observations that the degree of knowledge and commitment for this topic, among Polish students, is rather low. Therefore, she conducted a survey in three academic centres, among students representing four faculties in humanities (98 respondents). Unfortunately, the results confirmed her initial observations. In this group, knowledge about the scope and nature of Polish humanitarian aid for Africa was pour and shallow. In addition, the author drew attention to the low level of interest for this issue, presented by the respondents. However, the author believes that the undertaken study is worth continuing, for instance, with respect to reasons for this situation.

The ageing of people is one of the most important social issues of the modern world. This is a global phenomenon, concerning all regions and almost all countries. This problem pertains also to Poland and Germany. The following article is based on empirical studies whose subject were the social competencies profiles of Polish and German students preparing for caregiving of the elderly people. The method of the study was a diagnostic survey, whereas the research instruments used in the study were PROKOS. Social Competencies Profile by A. Matczak and K. Martowska and The questionnaire for the analysis of motivation to work with elderly people for students of social wellbeing majors (self-constructed questionnaire). Research studies were carried out between October and December 2018. In Poland, they involved students from Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin and the University of Rzeszów, while in Germany, students from universities of Münster, Osnabrück, Bielefeld and Wolfsburg. German students (200 people) constituted the main group, whereas the comparative group consisted of 167 Polish students. The results of the research demonstrated significant statistic differences in the range of all distinguished types of social competencies between the examined Polish and German groups of students (p < 0,001).

In Poland the collapse of the communist regime in 1989 had multiple and diverse implications for all the aspects of the life of Polish people. Its impact on the essential elements of the educational process, which are the student, the teacher and the curriculum, is unquestionable. The presentinquiry is structured around these three elements, in order to, firstly, foreground their complexities and, secondly, draw some conclusions regarding the place that should/can Pre-Modern French literature occupy in university curriculum in non-francophone countries.

This paper describes the experience of working with a homogeneous group of students, ages 18–25 years old, who studied Croatian as a first or a second foreign Slavic language. A few, isolated examples showcase analysis of errors recorded or documented in tests, dictations, and essays as well as oral and written communication with Polish students of Croatian language. The errors are mistakes that reflect interference, the similarities between the two languages. Given the limited space in this paper, we will not offer strategies or tips to avoid these mistakes effectively.

For a couple of years already Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Cracow University has been hosting students from various parts of the world; and Ukrainian students are the most numerous . The growing number can bring, beside the undoubted benefits, not only of financial kind, conflicts on the grounds of culture differences, language, customs and traditions. This problem does not only apply to potential conflicts between Polish students and those coming from such exotic countries as African or Arabic ones but also conflicts with students from more familiar cultures. This article presents close analysis of the study carried out among Polish and Ukrainian students of Cracow university by means of qualitative and quantitative methods. The study shows the mutual image and stereotypes of both groups which may have influence on the process of academic integration of the above mentioned respondents.

This study aimed to evaluate the COVID-19 pandemic anxiety experienced by students in Poland and its impact on their: social support, satisfaction with studying online and expectations of success in life. The data was obtained from a survey of Polish public and private university students. The research presented here examined the environmental and psychosocial effects of social withdrawal during the first period of the pandemic on the well-being and confidence in their chances for success in academic study. Recognising the individual and social condition of adolescents standing at the threshold of social maturity is essential to understanding the pedagogical and motivational consequences of institutional anti-pandemic regulation.

The goal of this study was to determine the preferences concerning Facebook usage by university students in Poland and the Czech Republic regarding their gender and nationality. This study aimed also to discover the relation between the need to be popular on Facebook and three key factors: the number of Facebook friends, activity on Facebook and perceived enjoyment during this activity. To get necessary data, multiple research tools were developed – a questionnaire consisting of four sections and a 12-item questionnaire measuring the level of the need for popularity. Results show that there is no significant differences in the background of Facebook usage between Polish and Czech students. However, there is a statistically significant correlation between the need for popularity and two factors: the number of friends (r = .501) and the level of perceived enjoyment in using Facebook (r = .401). The results suggest that participants feel pleasure while undertaking different actions on Facebook and treat Facebook as a way to increase their perceived popularity.

The author of this article made a synthetic presentation of the results of the research of Polish and Italian historiography (based on the surveys into the primary sources) regarding the sojourn and study of Klemens Janicki at the University of Padua. Preserved doctoral diploma and poetic laurels bestowed upon the poet at the same time allowed the reconstruction of the course of this ceremony and identification of its participants. Academic atmosphere of Padua was presented in the article, including its prominent representatives: lawyers, philosophers and physicians, as well as the group of Polish students from the first half of the sixteenth century.

Due to the fact that Chinese and Polish belong to completely different language families I intend to discuss one grammatical phenomenon that appears in the Chinese language. In the first part I will focus on the explanation of the term “classifier”, the second part will deal with the methods which Polish and Chinese teachers use to differently explain classifiers. Through this article I will depict the different ways the world is perceived as a result of using different language systems.

“Erasmus”, named after a Dutch humanist and theologian, Erasmus of Rotterdam, is the European Commission’s programme for Higher Education (students, teachers and institutions). It was introduced with the aim of increasing student mobility within the European Community, subsequently including the European Economic Area countries, Switzerland and the Candidate Countries. Erasmus has been one of the four sectoral programmes supported under the EU Lifelong Learning Programme until the end of 2013. The author of this article in relation to the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the “Erasmus” program describes the current educational opportunities of Polish students. Firstly, he presents the selected challenges and opportunities of cultural and educational uniting Europe. Then, the statistical outline of youth in Poland in the context of the European Union and the display of the educational offers within the framework of European programs is shown.

The reprinted paper refers to Georg Lind and his colleagues’ MCT-based FORM study conducted at several European universities in 1977-1983, including Polish ones. After a short phase of democratization, in 1981 Polish society suddenly faced martial law. That experience had an impact on Polish students moral-, discursiveand democratic competences, as measured by MCT. When Ewa Nowak started her Alexander von Humboldt Foundation supported research stay under the supervision of Professor Georg Lind (University of Konstanz, 2008-2010), they were inspired to revisit and discuss the puzzling Polish research findings of 1981/3. According to their main hypothesis, martial law restricted free speech at universities, and free speech is a key facilitator of the development of moral and democratic competence. In 2018, after a decade of collaborative research on moral and democratic competence, Lind, Nowak and colleagues started a new international MCT study in several Central- and East European countries to examine the impact of the contemporary constitutional crisis in Poland (and the institutional crisis within the European Union) on students’ moral and democratic competencies. In 2018/9 the 40th anniversary of the Moral Competence Test (MCT) and Konstanz Method of Dilemma Discussion (KMDD) will be celebrated. We would like to provide you with the most recent research findings soon.

The aim of this paper is to describe and analyse attitudes towards, and reasons for, code-switching among English Philology students. The authors show the evolution in the perception of code-switching by linguists. In the past it was seen as a violation of the linguistic norm, whereas today it is often perceived as an indispensable tool in the process of communication among bi- and multilingual speakers. The attitudes of linguists have been compared with those of students and laypeople. It appears that code-switching may be both a valuable linguistic tool which enlarges one’s linguistic repertoire and a sign of linguistic incompetence, which is reflected in the mixed attitudes towards this phenomenon among English Philology students, who usually present a high level of linguistic awareness.

The article focuses on the contemporary images and associations of Polish university students with their Eastern neighbours – Belarus and Belarusians. At the beginning of the article I argue that Belarusians for a long time remained a relatively unknown nation, not only for the distant Western Europeans or Americans, but also for the neighbouring states. An overview of Polish public opinion research concerning the national stereotypes and attitudes towards Belarusians is provided. 150 surveys with Polish university students in Warsaw and Krakow have been conducted. The analysis of the results shows that an overwhelming majority of university students associate Belarus and Belarusians with its contemporary political situation. Associations with people, their culture and customs are marginal. Moreover, Belarusians were neither familiar, nor interesting, to the majority of Polish students. Thus, the stereotypical image of Belarusians is not well shaped in Poland – until today they remain rather unknown and vague to Poles.

Do dziś Białorusini pozostają raczej mało znani Polakom.

In the period between the World Wars, the numerous Polish minority in the Republic of Lithuania (or Kaunas Lithuania, as Poles used to call it) found themselves in a very precarious position. It was due to severed diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Poland and the hostile attitude of the Lithuanian authorities towards the Polish residents. Many of the Poles in Lithuania were young people of university age. At that time, new ideological and organisational initiatives would reach the Republic of Lithuania through various channels from the academic centres of Vilnius (then in the Republic of Poland). However, it was only after the establishment of Kaunas University that many young Poles were admitted to various faculties. In 1925, an idea was put forward to establish an organisation for the Polish academic youth. This is how the Union of Polish Students of the University of Lithuania was formed. This fact raised hopes for some form of Polish-Lithuanian reconciliation. The Polish youth studying at the university in Kaunas were more eager to seek mutual collaboration than the older generation of compatriots. The same was true about the views and forms of ideological and organisational work. For example, a number of views and initiatives surfaced that aimed to consolidate and unite the entire youth movement around the situation of the Polish minority in Lithuania. This becomes evident when exploring the ideological spirit and programme of annual rallies and celebrations held by the Polish academic youth in Lithuania. The movement spawned many outstanding activists who tried to adopt a broader approach to of the Polish initiatives in Lithuania instead of narrowing them down to the usual stereotypes created in the time of Polish-Lithuanian dispute and conflicts. The leading role in this process was assumed by the Union of Polish Students of the University of Lithuania in Kaunas (in 1930 named after Duke Vytautas the Great). This organisation influenced the entire Polish community in Lithuania, whose intelligentsia had already been severely depleted. The union also enjoyed a significant position at the university in Kaunas as well as among the entire academic fraternity in Lithuania and abroad. Many merited participants of the anti-Soviet and anti-Nazi opposition struggling for the Polish cause in the following years were recruited from among the ranks of the academic youth. After WW2, the survivors settled in in Białystok, Gdańsk, Olsztyn, Toruń, Warsaw, and Wrocław.

Można to dostrzec śledząc ducha ideowego i przebieg dorocznych uroczystości i zjazdów polskiej młodzieży akademickiej Litwy. Z jej szeregów wyrosło wielu wybitnych działaczy, którzy zadania ruchu polskiego na Litwie widzieli nieco szerzej, niż utarte stereotypy powstałe w czasach sporu i konfliktów polsko-litewskich. Z szeregów młodzieży akademickiej wyrosło wielu znanych uczestników opozycji antysowieckiej i antyhitlerowskiej, którzy czynnie włączyli się do walki o sprawę polską.

Upon the institution of the Lithuanian University in Kowno (Kaunas), graduates of three Polish gymnasiums (in Kowno, Poniewież, Wiłkomierz) faced an opportunity to undertake higher education. At the same time, many young Poles who were born in Lithuania studied abroad, mostly in Austria, Belgium and France. For obvious reasons, they made attempts to establish their own organizations and associations. This trend was highly diverse in structural terms, which made it difficult to cooperate. In Kowno alone, three such establishments were created: Union of Polish Students of the Lithuanian University (now Vytautas Magnus University), the Students’ Corporation “Lauda”, and the Union of Polish Girl Students of the Lithuanian University “Znicz”. Nonetheless, there were various establishments for Polish students from Lithuania, and this situation not only led to a fragmentation of Polish academia, but it even faced disintegration and internal disputes. This happened when the World Union of Poles Abroad (Warsaw) recommended that fellow Poles living abroad consolidate as much as possible and cooperate in one uniform system of organization. This idea, despite enmity between Poland and Lithuania, would reach as far as Kowno. Such an attempt was made despite some resistance from some youth activists in the latter half of the 1920s. It followed from the fear that other new organizations might appear and make it even more difficult to collaborate, whereas existing ones were not keen on relinquishing the autonomy they already had. In order to avoid this kind of controversy, the idea emerged to establish a federation that would not abolish existing student institutions, but would unite them in one principal organization. To this end, on 27–28 August 1927, a congress of Polish youth from Lithuania was organized. The event proved very successful because a new organization was established: the Union of Polish Academic Youth in Lithuania (ZPMAL). The basis of its functioning was defined by the statute, which consolidated all Polish university students living in Lithuania. As the central body, the Union was to coordinate common activities and safeguard the ideological profile of its members and take care of the Polish minority. While leaving the structure of existing units intact, the statute obliged their members to be members of the ZPMAL at the same time. Although the ZPMAL met all required changes stipulated in the statute, it was dissolved on 10 January 1938. Attempts at reversing this decision were ultimately rejected on 6 April 1938, and this date is regarded as the day of the final closure.

Wraz z powstaniem Litewskiego Uniwersytety w Kownie (1922) wśród absolwentów polskich trzech gimnazjów (Kowno, Poniewież, Wiłkomierz) pojawiła się okazja podjęcia studiów wyższych. Jednocześnie wielu młodych Polaków z terenów Litwy studiowało w uczelniach zagranicznych, szczególnie w Austrii, Belgi i Francji. Z oczywistych względów młodzież ta podejmowała próby zakładania własnych organizacji i stowarzyszeń.

Among the educational destinations chosen by the citizens of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Padua occupied a prominent position. This was primarily due to the city’s esteemed university, situated along the Bacchiglione canal. Serving as the principal intellectual hub of the Venetian Republic, the university had attracted distinguished scholars for centuries. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it was especially the university’s medical studies that became popular among those seeking to boast a comprehensive education, acquired under the tutelage of Europe’s finest minds. Aspiring medical practitioners and members of noble families alike flocked to the City of Antenor, as Padua was called, in pursuit of erudition and cosmopolitan refinement. This article aims to elucidate the multifaceted dimensions of these sojourns in Padua, which exerted direct or indirect influences on the transformations in the broadly understood health culture of the Polish-Lithuanian territories.

Wśród celów podróży edukacyjnych obywateli I Rzeczypospolitej Padwa zajmowała miejsce szczególne.

In this paper I will discuss the importance of introducing minority voices when teaching American literature in Polish universities, and explore the multi-layered process necessary in doing so. I will argue that an interactive approach is essential in giving students a real understanding of diversity in America through literature. As examples of diverse American literature I will consider some writers already included in the standard American canon, such as William Faulkner and James Baldwin, and others who, though not canonical, represent important perspectives in the fabric of the American literary landscape, including Zadie Smith and David Sedaris. I will explore the ways in which these texts represent aspects of American diversity that are necessary for Polish students seeking to understand the American experience. Into this discussion of multiple voices, I will interweave my own account of the teaching process, beginning with choosing writers who accurately represent the complex cultural experience of America, to referencing the cultural background of the students, to offering concrete information about the cultural context of the writing under discussion. I will conclude with a discussion of the ways in which accurate readings of American literary diversity inform students’ broader understanding of American literature, and provide suggestions for others interested in teaching such a course.

This article presents the results of an associative experiment in which 128 Polish students from Podlaskie Province took part. As a result of this study, 643 Polish language free-verbal responses to the stimuli included in the survey (Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians) were collected. It was assumed that the ideas functioning in the consciousness of Poles about the representatives of other culture‑Poland’s eastern neighbours‑and expressed through language, can be interpreted as a premise for communication between them both in the private and professional field.
