Finding solutions to the problems of environmental protection and nature conservation, developing and performing environmentally conscious behaviour have become the main task of recent decade, this equally involves political, economic and social spheres. Beyond networking between these spheres, the media have to undertake a specific role in solving the above-mentioned problems and also attaining sustainability. A survey was conducted among 234 students between the age of 13-17, searching for the answers what connections students have to the media and whether and to what extent they are reached by the thematic channels and television programmes related to the environment and nature. It is argued that to deal with the issues raised by the results of the survey, a module dealing with environmental protection and nature conservation based on the application of different elements of media should be created for Hungarian schools.

The present study attempted to highlight the main processes of the acquisition and development of various environmental perspectives and puts forward suggestions on how youth can be better addressed in the light of the research findings. The present paper involved the use of a number of focus groups and a contextual study that examined the development of environmental education on the Maltese islands, considered the main local environmental issues and subsequently analysed the main causes and mechanisms that have shaped the development of the local environment and the Maltese people. The present research identifies a number of geographic and socio economic trends which have a strong impact on young people's knowledge. The results indicate relatively low positive behaviour towards the environment, and the main issue appears to be what is seen as the ‘costs’ involved in performing such pro-environmental actions. A pervasive sense of futility in environmental actions emerged with issues relating to the Maltese government and politics being the main reasons for this feeling. An environmental perspectives model was designed employing the technique of graphical display. The model illustrates how young people perceive the future of the Maltese environment through three Cartesian axes.

„Responsible consumption and production”, „climatic action”, „life below water” and „life on land” – these four issues are only few examples of the sustainable development goals [Sustainable Development – Knowledge Platform] (https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org). To achieve them, however, one should take into consideration another goal – this is namely „quality education”. There is a need to support the process of teaching with practical experiences to awaken the curiosity. In the face of great anthropopression, here we suggest a classes scenario for the primary school students.

In the pursuit of success, stuck in the shadow of reality, we often forget that every day we use goods of the environment which surrounds us. We do not realize that behavior of particular people, their families and social groups influences the elements of natural history. This article focuses on the adjustment of our lifestyle to the idea of balanced development. That is why environmental education, which supports understanding the correlation between man, his products and the environment, should be offered to all people, in particular the youngest, who will be able to direct the patterns of pro-environmental behavior to elderly people.

This paper discusses the historic development of environmental education in Malta and identifies environmental non-governmental organisations as the main promoters of environmental education in Malta. Environmental awareness started to increase as a response to major environmental issues on the island, but was a long affair, hindered in its development by a number of factors, including the governments' non-committal policy, the colonial mentality and the highly competitive educational system. European Union accession had a positive impact on the development mainly due to the imposed requirements. Subsequent governments have realised the importance of environmental education as an effective solution to ensure environmental sustainability. Nonetheless, as environmental education goals take a long time to be achieved, the lack of short-term achievements may be somewhat hindering its development. A context-based environmental education development model was designed to illustrate the complex relations identified in the study. The study suggests a commitment towards locally produced materials, genuine environmental non-governmental organisations and funding up of a co-ordinating centre for the promotion of environmental education at all academic levels.

The aim of the article is to explain problems related to environmental education of children in the Second Republic of Poland, based on selected examples of the work of Maria Arct-Golczewska, Zofia Bohuszewiczówna and Wanda Haberkantówna. The work of these authors, i.e. stories for children and textbooks for environmental education to be used at general schools and secondary schools, was recommended by the Minister of Denominations and Public Enlightenment. These stories and textbooks were intended as teaching aids in the environmental education process, a process that was an implication of all educational activities. The authors named above also translated, into Polish, and popularized the work of foreign authors, especially the following: A. E. Brehm, A. B. Buckley, H. Coupin, H. Fabre, E. Hassenpflug, P. Ledoux, G. G. Lewis and E. Thompson. It must be emphasised that the work of these foreign authors were also used as teaching aids during the Second Republic of Poland.

An understanding of the current situation of nature experiences among adolescents is of critical importance for the protection of nature. The participants of this study are 14-15 year-old pupils from Bavaria (Southern Germany) and Asturias (Northern Spain). In particular, the author was interested in a) the level of outdoor experiences of each group; b) the influence of independent factors, such as gender and environmental behaviour at home, upon nature experiences; c) the relationship between outdoor experiences and environmental knowledge, readiness to act and actual environmental behaviour; d) cultural differences between Asturian and Bavarian pupils. Using a standardised questionnaire, the data were collected in spring 2007. As the study showed, nature experiences can be separated into different dimensions. There are differences in the extent and type of influence nature experiences have on the samples of Bavaria and Asturias. The Asturian pupils have higher values in the dimension relating to their present situation and in their expectations of future nature experiences in comparison with the pupils in the sample of Bavaria. Also, it might be proven (with the help of regressions) that nature experiences may positively affect environmental knowledge, attitudes and actions. These results could potentially help educators and researchers to identify the aspects of existing in-school programmes and extra-curricular activities that need to be improved.

This paper provides an analysis of selected topics in the field of eco-ethics. The school should be more involved in the protection of the natural environment, mainly by shaping truly responsible attitudes. Ecological education must become an integral part of a person’s upbringing. The aim of education should be to create and develop correct pro-ecological attitudes, which are opposed to the uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources. Environmental sustainability is only possible if people are persuaded to give up the consumer lifestyle (the so-called ecological asceticism).

The present investigation has been conducted to compare the level of environmental awareness among the University of Warsaw Bachelor students of selected fields of study, which are: economics, geography and environmental protection. Diagnostic survey method was used to collect data from 180 students. The research interviewees included 60 economics students (equivalent to 33.3% of all respondents), 56 geography students (31.1% of respondents) and 64 environmental science students (35.6% of respondents). The gender division was as follows: 119 females (66.1% of all respondents) and 61 males (33.9%) took part in the research. The survey consisted of two parts. The main part - “The study of environmental awareness” - referred to the dependent variable. Respondents were asked to provide answers to 21 questions. Twenty of them were closed-ended questions, while one was open-ended. The second part was demographics, which referred to independent variable – selected socio-demographic characteristics of respondents. The data were subjected to descriptive and chi-square analyses. Statistical analysis software STATA for Windows was used for statistical analysis. The significance level was set at 5%. The study showed that the field of study significantly affects the answers declared by students in 6 of 21 questions (number: 6, 8, 11, 12, 16 and 20). Gender significantly affects the answers declared by students in 2 questions (number: 2 and 10). It can therefore be assumed that field of study had much stronger influence on student’s level of environmental awareness than their gender.

Teachers who are specialized in environmental education (environmental education school coordinators1) can play an important role in empowering students to shape a sustainable future. In this study, the authors examined a group of Czech environmental education school coordinators. The authors aimed to clarify how they interpret their role at their respective schools, how they perceive their self-efficacy, and what they observe as benefits and barriers to their work as a coordinator. They conducted a qualitative study with focus groups and completed individual in-depth interviews with the coordinators. The results suggest that the coordinators view their work as a mission. The ultimate goal of this mission is to change the children’s behavior to make it more pro-environmental, and, at the same time, to establish this effort as a commitment of the whole school. The authors identified different forms of mission, described development in time and connected them with the perceived self-efficacy of the coordinators.

Based both on a historical approach regarding the evolution of the environmental education between 1960 and present days, and on empirical research as well, the author proves that the efficiency of the environmental education could be much higher if included within the broader sphere of moral and civic education and if it is driven by a more extensive ideal sprung from the fundamental human right to a clean and well preserved environment, by the contemporary moral and civil values. The author pleads and motivates for an increased capitalization of the humanities and social sciences, of art, of environmental ethics and aesthetics in shaping “the ecological personality” of the tomorrow people. When shaping these personality traits through environmental education activities, one must emphasize the importance of practice and applied actions aimed to protect the environment, and in general, the practice of civic-moral education methods.

Researchers alert – children spend less and less time being in nature, which has a detrimental effect on their physical and mental health. As the response to these appeals, such foundations as ‘Dzieci w Naturę’ or ‘Pracownia Edukacji Żywej,’ as well as private initiatives like ‘Wielki Zachwyt’ or ‘Szkoła Bosych Stóp’ appeared. They organize workshops, family walks and trips to the forest giving children an opportunity to play in nature. Natural playgrounds can be an addition to those activities, which in a way ‘bring’ nature into the cities, residential areas, schools, and kindergartens. In this article, the author presents various examples of good practices that allow children to play in nature.

In today’s world of rapidly increasing environmental concerns, traditional environmental education provides the level of knowledge that will meet teaching targets but is ineffective in achieving the highest goals in this context. Effective environmental education should facilitate the highest level of attitude development in individuals, helping them to form value judgments and attain participatory skills. In this study, a program of authentic learning-based teaching was designed to be used in the teaching of today’s environmental issues and an attempt was made to determine the effectiveness of such teaching. The research data were collected by posing 10 open-ended questions to 168 pre-service teachers before and after the teaching program. The data were subjected to qualitative and quantitative analysis. The results showed that teaching by making use of the authentic learning-based technique of panel discussion was markedly effective in achieving the higher level skills of forming value judgments and increasing initiative-oriented participatory skills focused on the environment.
